How to type it

On any app: select the character above and copy — or use the Alt + X trick in Word/Outlook (type the hex code, then press Alt+X to convert it).

Keyboard shortcuts, by system
General reference

Windows

Win + . (period) or Win + ; — opens the emoji, symbol and kaomoji picker anywhere you can type.

Alt + numpad digits — hold Alt and type a code on the numeric keypad (e.g. Alt+0233 gives é). Only works for the Latin‑1 range (0–255) and needs a physical numpad.

In Word / Outlook: type a character's hex code, then press Alt + X to convert the code into the character (and back again).

Mac

Ctrl + Cmd + Space — opens the Character Viewer, searchable by name, with recents and favourites.

Option‑key combos type accented letters directly, e.g. +e then the letter for acute accents (é, á, ó…), +u then the letter for umlauts (ü, ö…), +n then the letter for tildes (ñ, ã).

Linux

Ctrl + Shift + U, then type the hex code, then press Enter or Space (GTK apps). In IBus, tap Ctrl + Shift + E to search characters by name as you type.

Any device

The fastest method everywhere is usually the one this page is built for: search by name here, tap to copy, then paste. No codes to remember.
